The Senior Keeper Program is designed to provide animal education and conservation awareness to seniors, ages 62 and above.
Being held on the first Friday of each month from 9:30 am until 11:00 am, each session will consist of a lecture on a specific animal, ZOO News, and an animal encounter of the featured animal. Participants are then able to tour The ZOO at their leisure.
At this time, there are seven (7) rotating themes for The Senior Keeper Program. Here they are in no particular order:
Wildlife Trade- Suitcase for Survival: Should plants and animals be used for medicine? Find out how legal and illegal wildlife trade can affect biodiversity.
African Safari: Catch a glimpse of life in the African bush with artifacts, stories, and photos. A photo “safari” is taken through The Zoo with your educator providing information on our African wildlife at The Zoo.
Animal Clinic Tour: Veterinary methods for exotic species are explored during a visit to our animal clinic.
World of Birds: Learn about the amazing abilities of birds like migration and navigation. Walk through The Zoo’s “Ibis Pond” and identify our many species of waterfowl.
Animal IQ: Are we the smartest animals on the planet? We’ll discuss the latest scientific views on animal intelligence and out them to the test at The Zoo’s orangutan exhibit.
Wild Florida: Guided tour featuring our native wildlife population in a setting reminiscent of an “Old Florida” settlement. Feed alligators at the ‘Gator Hole’!
“Realm of the Tiger”: Explore the plight of this endangered big cat with photos and artifacts. A visit to The Zoo’s Bengal tiger exhibit will illustrate the similarities to the habitat of wild tigers.
The cost for The Senior Keeper Program is $3.00 plus admission to The ZOO.
